So if you’ve ever thought about visiting Paramount Ranch, now’s the time to get serious about taking a day trip to visit this incredible site. We’ll fill you in briefly about the history of the place, tell you the names of some of the movies that were shot here, and go into further detail about the fun and exciting things you can do while you visit.

A Brief History of Paramount Ranch

Although Paramount Pictures started renting space here in 1923, it wasn’t until 1927 that they finally purchased 2700 acres of land on this lot known as the old Rancho Las Virgenes. They originally decided to purchase this land – and it’s definitely huge at 2700 acres – to create a movie ranch. Basically this is a place they would be able to go to to film movie scenes that either required a ranch or didn’t.

The interesting thing about this site is that so many of the most important people in Hollywood spent roughly 25 years honing their craft on this ranch. You had people like Bob Hope, Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, and directors like Cecil B. DeMille making movie magic from this amazing location.

As a matter of fact, the reason why this is such a great place to film is because it has so many interesting and diverse landscapes. Many people feel that the landscapes themselves have taken over and become the stars of many shows and movies. And since there was so much land, they could literally use it to create all different types of distant locales. They turned it into colonial Massachusetts when filming the movie The Maid of Salem. They turned this lot into ancient China when filming The Adventures of Marco Polo. And they turned it into a South Seas Island when they were filming the movie Ebb Tide. Clearly, there’s lots of history on this ranch and it’s definitely a place of historical significance.

So you know, Paramount Ranch is no longer owned by Paramount Pictures. As a matter of fact, they sold off large chunks of it in the 1950s. And from the years 1957 and 1980, the ranch ended up changing many hands throughout those years, but it’s still important to know that many people continue to film in the area. So you can see the Paramount Ranch in movies even to this day. Sandra Bullock filmed the movie here in 2006 called The Lake House, as an example of a recent movie.
