    • Dogs are welcome, but must remain on a leash.

    • There are plenty of on-site restrooms and water fountains.

    The History of Los Encinos

This historic site was once the primary source of water for the Tongva, the Native Americans who originally inhabited what is now the Los Angeles area. After Spanish missionaries discovered the location in the late 1700's, it quickly became a coveted trade route between LA and Santa Barbara. Several cultures and nations owned this area between the 1840's and the early 20th century, giving it a unique mix of influences in architecture and design.

Today, traces of Mission Indian, Mexican Californio, Basque, and French settlers remain in this restored piece of history. The natural spring that provided water to these people over the centuries continues to flow, creating a serene destination and favorite spot for ducks in the area.

The park gets its name from the De la Osa Adobe, a historic building that served as the hub to the Rancho El Encino. As different owners from different cultures bought the land, they expanded the ranch to include the many buildings that still stand there today.

    What to Do While Visiting

The main draw to Los Encinos Historic Park is its ability to create a tranquil environment within the city. Even as the roads and blocks around it continue to modernize, this slice of history has remained virtually the same since it was originally discovered.

While walking along the trail or sitting by the lake, it's easy to forget that you're in the northern Los Angeles area. While it may not be as large as Tonga State Park, it offers resident a convenient way to de-stress during their hectic weeks.
